The WASH Foundation’s Mission in Tororo District
What if your child had to walk a kilometer each day for water? Too often, this journey leads to sickness instead of safety.
This is the daily reality for thousands of students in Uganda’s Tororo District, where clean water and basic hygiene are out of reach for most families. In 2025, The WASH Foundation is making a real difference by building wells, installing handwashing stations, and providing vital hygiene education. These efforts restore health and hope to entire communities.

This stream is the current source of water for students at Magodes Primary School and is 950 meters (0.6 miles) away from the school.
Why Clean Water Matters
Only 42% of Uganda’s primary schools have access to water on campus, and less than half have reliable places for children to wash their hands. Without these essentials, students face a higher risk of waterborne disease, missed school days, and heartbreaking health outcomes. Diarrheal disease alone causes 5% of under-5 deaths, and Uganda’s childhood mortality rate remains among the highest in the region.
At Magodes Primary School, a vibrant community of more than 1,200 students, the absence of clean water meant long walks to fetch what was often contaminated. The cost was far more than inconvenience, it was lost learning, frequent illness, and dreams put on hold.
Smart Infrastructure and Community-Led Change
The WASH Foundation’s approach does not stop at drilling water wells. This multi-phase initiative adds rainwater catchment systems, upgrades latrines, and builds handwashing stations. More importantly, it pairs infrastructure with education, equipping students, teachers, and families to adopt healthier practices that last.
This year, six schools and one healthcare center will be improved, serving more than 8,000 students and 3,000 patients annually. Each new well provides clean, clean water for under $10 per child, so donors can see their impact in every gift.

Magodes Primary School’s Empowerment
Before, children at Magodes Primary endured daily journeys just to collect water. The installation of a new water well means students now drink safely, wash their hands after class, and can focus on their studies. Teachers see higher attendance and a renewed sense of community pride.
Why WASH Supports SDGs and Community Wellbeing
WASH, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, fuels Sustainable Development Goal 6, affirming the human right to water and emphasizing the need for sanitation for all. When children have safe water at school, girls are more likely to stay in class, health improves, and communities prosper.
How You Can Help: Joining the Movement for Water
This campaign aims to raise $13,000 for each well, enough to serve an average of 1,318 students. For less than $10, you can provide a child in Uganda with water for life. Each donation builds wells, upgrades sanitation, and brings WASH education to those who need it most.
