In an exciting development for global health and disaster preparedness, The WASH Foundation has been selected as a Commitment Maker by the prestigious Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). This recognition highlights our dedication to improving lives through water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives, particularly in disaster-prone regions.
Championing Caribbean Resilience: Our CGI Commitment
Our commitment, “Using WASH to Build Disaster Resilience in the Caribbean”, aims to address the critical need for sustainable WASH infrastructure in areas vulnerable to natural disasters. The Caribbean region, known for its beautiful landscapes and vibrant cultures, also faces significant challenges due to hurricanes, floods, and other climate-related events. By focusing on this region, we’re taking a proactive approach to building resilience and improving health outcomes for communities at risk.
The Scope of Our Initiative
Through this initiative, The WASH Foundation will implement disaster-resilient WASH infrastructure in 10 schools (totaling 30 overall) and 1 healthcare facility across the Caribbean. We’ll train 500 community members in WASH best practices and disaster preparedness, ensuring that local families have the knowledge and skills to maintain and improve their WASH resources. Additionally, our efforts will impact 155,000 individuals with access to improved water and sanitation facilities. By focusing on schools and communities, we’re not just building infrastructure – we’re creating lasting change and empowering local residents to take charge of their health and well-being.
The Urgent Need for WASH Resilience
The Caribbean region faces unique challenges when it comes to WASH and disaster resilience. Frequent natural disasters disrupt water and sanitation systems, leaving communities vulnerable to waterborne diseases and other health risks. Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, exacerbating these issues. Many communities lack access to reliable, safe water sources, which impacts everything from daily life to economic opportunities. Our commitment addresses these issues head-on, providing both immediate relief and long-term solutions that will help build more resilient communities.

Our work will not only enable communities to mitigate the deadly effects of disaster but will also improve health outcomes and contribute to long-term economic stability and social progress. By focusing on WASH infrastructure and education, we’re laying the groundwork for generations of healthier, more resilient communities. This project has the potential to serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges, showcasing how targeted WASH interventions can play a crucial role in disaster preparedness and community development.
Together, we can improve health and transform lives, one community at a time. Join us in this exciting journey towards a more resilient Caribbean.
