At The WASH Foundation, we believe that access to clean water is a fundamental human right. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Magodes Primary School in the Tororo District of Eastern Uganda, where over 1,200 students and teachers face a daily struggle for this basic necessity.
A Kilometer Too Far: The Daily Water Journey at Magodes Primary School
Imagine starting your school day with a two kilometer long walk (1.2 miles) to collect water from a stream. This is the reality for the children at Magodes Primary School. The image above shows the current water source – a shallow stream surrounded by vegetation. This water, used for drinking and sanitation, poses significant health risks to the school community.
The situation at Magodes Primary School reflects a broader challenge in Uganda. Only 42% of primary schools in the country have on-site water access. In the Tororo District specifically, just 59% of the population has access to clean water.
The impact of clean water access extends far beyond convenience. In Uganda, diarrheal diseases account for 5% of deaths in children under 5. By providing clean water and proper sanitation facilities, we can significantly reduce these preventable tragedies.
Drilling for Clean Water at Magodes Primary School
Our hydrological survey confirms we can drill a borehole on the school grounds. This means clean water will be accessible right at the school. Students will have more time for education instead of water collection. Improved hygiene and sanitation practices will lead to better health outcomes for the entire school community.
The impact is particularly significant for girls. In similar projects, schools report dramatic increases in attendance, with girls’ participation rising by up to 23%. Clean water access means girls are more likely to stay in school, especially after reaching puberty.
Looking Ahead
Your support can make this transformation possible. By bringing clean water to Magodes Primary School we’re opening doors to education and improving the health of an entire community. Over 1,200 people, including 595 female students, will directly benefit from this project.
Join us in our mission to improve health and transform lives. Together, we can ensure that the students of Magodes Primary School have the clean water they deserve, setting the stage for a brighter, healthier future.
