Volunteer Spotlight: Penn State University and The University of Kentucky Join Forces to Make an Impact
Each year Penn State Alumni Association makes it a priority to help others by getting involved in the local community. This year they chose Clean the World, pairing a volunteer activity with a hygiene kit building event to experience our mission full circle, while preparing hygiene supplies for those in need.
“The idea of having our alumni tour group (the majority of whom were staying in hotels that week) work on re-purposing and assembling hygiene kits was a perfect way for them to learn the impact of your organization. I wanted each of them to remember Clean the World every time they looked at those toiletries while traveling and the impact they had on helping others in need. Many took the opportunity to walk through the soap museum and I know everyone enjoyed learning just how much Clean the World reaches. Our local volunteers recognize the importance of the re-purposing as we understand the effects events such as hurricanes can have on people.”

Over one hundred people came to our Orlando warehouse, ahead of their Citrus Bowl matchup. Some gathered around the bright green sorting tables to sort recycled hygiene amenities from our hotel partners, while others lined up to assemble hygiene kits benefiting our Emergency Relief Program. The band and cheerleaders from each university held an exclusive pep rally just for the event, keeping volunteers’ spirits high with chants echoing all throughout Clean the World’s warehouse.
We would like to thank everyone who came out to support our mission by sorting soap and assembling hygiene kits, even taking the time out to write meaningful inspirational cards to add to the kits. It is heartwarming to know that two competing teams can come together for a great cause and to better the community.
“A special time was watching our own Alumni Association President’s son (who has autism), jump right into sorting. He needed no guidance and to see that type of impact on him and a person with his challenges was a special thing. I know this inspired his mother to bring the concept home to Pennsylvania in some way. Clean the World may impact those they help in crisis, but it also touched our own volunteers in a special way as well. It was a great event and everyone who attended had nothing but great things to say.”
