This month, some of our CThe WASH Foundation, an evolution of Clean the World Foundation team members, including Executive Director, Manohar Shenoy, traveled to the Dominican Republic to consult with members of the Ministry of Health.
Our team met with the Director of the Department of Environmental Health, Dr. Carlos Manuel Cueto, and the Minister of Health, Dr. Daniel Rivera, to discuss how our existing WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) programming in the Dominican Republic can expand its impact by being implemented in schools, health centers, and communities across other parts of the country. Currently, our WASH in Schools program serves four economically challenged schools in the Bavaro area of Punta Cana.
Our team members also traveled to the Haitian border in the Elías Piña Zone where they were able to see for themselves the current WASH needs of Haitians crossing the border. It is estimated that every day between 3,000 and 4,000 Haitians migrate to the Dominican Republic.
We met with health officials in that zone to discuss the potential of binging our WASH programming to schools and communities there. We look forward to continuing and expanding our WASH programs in the Dominican Republic.
