Hygiene Help at the United States Border
Here at Clean the World, our mission is to provide water, sanitation, and hygiene to vulnerable populations around the world – and in our own back yard.
On Thursday, June 20th, conditions of inadequate food, water, and sanitation at a Border Patrol station in Texas were brought to light. In a matter of a few days, Clean the World received numerous requests to provide hygiene supplies to help alleviate the situation of those in holding facilities all along the U.S. border. Requests continue to pour in as organizations, nonprofits, and individuals around the country are looking for solutions and ways to help.
Unfortunately, emergency situations like this occur every day in every country around the world. From natural disasters, like Cyclone Idai, to humanitarian crises, like the lack of access to WASH in refugee camps in Syria and Somalia, Clean the World is committed to providing hygiene supplies to those in need.
Currently, there are thousands in need in holding facilities right in our back yard. In an interview with the Associated Press, the United States Customs and Border Protection Commissioner stated that they have 11,000 more people in their facilities than what they can reasonably accommodate. Subsequently, all 15,000 people in custody of the U.S. Border Patrol are without appropriate hygiene and sanitation supplies.
In effort to support migrant children and families as well as U.S. Customs, Clean the World is sending soap to the United States-Mexico Border. One partner, Council on Immigrant Relations, was quick to reach out and offer to ship Clean the World soap into Mexico and as of June 24th, there has already been a shipment of 4 pallets containing a total of 24,000 bars of soap. However, spread among 15,000 people, the 24,000 bars won’t last long.
Today, Clean the World is prepared with 500,000 bars of new soap, 10,000 hygiene kits and tens of thousands of supplies to ship out immediately to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Detention Centers. The need for hygiene supplies at the border has seen national attention and Clean the World has received numerous requests for soap and other items. We are currently working with government officials and local organizations to get these much-needed supplies into the facilities.
